Hey did I ever mention a group of real nice students that I met back in Vancouver ? Well one group was called Sharing the Dream, and the other Students Live. I was looking at one of their blogs the other day, and found a really sweet video. It got me thinking ” WE SHOULD DO THIS IN LONDON!!!” a guy did it in NYC so why can’t we do it here? I think it will help Londoners relax more and stop being uptight. The key to the Winter  Games was that everyone in Vancouver was happy spirited and very friendly. If we took some time out and started being nice to strangers, by the time London 2012 Games gets underway we can be sure Britain will welcome the world with ‘smiles all round’ and even a few people dressed up as giant hearts!!

Wow, gosh i did’nt realise how hard it is to write in full sentances after being on Facbook… Any way Yesterday was one hell of a day!!

I  went to the to the ‘View-Tube’ with my fellow vacouver ‘peeps’ we got a really amazing view of the new olympic stadium and a not-so amazing view of the surrounding watse-land :( It was nice to meet up with the other young people in connection with A New Direction and see them so enthusiastic about their projects and how they are going to contribute the explore event. Oh yeah about that, basically ‘Exlpore’ is one of the CREATE events. Its open for everyone and is taking place on the Saturday 17th July from 12-4pm. The theme is : How can Young People take part in the 2012 Olympic Games. There’s going to be a range of entertainment (and hopefully food!!). A team of young programmers helped to put this event together (I know impressive right?)so the music artists will be good, I won’t tell you too much you’ll have come down to the event and  see the range young musical talent for yourself.
Too be honest I’m actually tired of people complaining about how they think London 2012 won’t be a success, either because they’re going over budget, or younger people aren’t being involved enough or simple because the weather be will be as bad as the athletes. The Olympic games aren’t just about how much money is spent or who win the most medals- it’s the ‘once in a lifetime’ experience we all have as Londoners and how we can welcome the world with our diversity. And this is what the Explore Event is all about. We’ll show you how you can get involved with the the 2012 Games without actually being in a stadium. So come down to our event where you can see the work ‘youths these days’ are producing and how YOU can get involved aswell. And it wont take alot of effort. Just take the  overhead to Stratford, and then the DLR. Easy as pie!

It’s been a month to this day that we jetted off to vancouver for our cultural exchange trip as british reporters. And hopefully it’s not the end of our  educated journey.

Our goal was to find out about how the Winter olympic and paralympic games and their cultural events are oraganised. Along with experiencing the dramatic affect both the games had on vancouver and how we can advise london how we can make our olympics games exciting and enjoyable for people of all ages.

I’ve learnt so much in just a week  from being in such a wonderfull city. One of the aspects of Vancouver that i’ll remember the most is the ex freindly people we met. It wasn’t just the paralympians the we interviewed, just general people in the street had a really positive vibe about the games. It was also really refreshing to see volunteers so willing and happy to do thier job. If  i could sum up the atomsphere in Vancouver using 3 words… I would say lively, energertic and welcoming.

As i’ve said before it’s not over yet and there’s more to come from a new direction’s  olympic correspondents. Today we’ve been discussing how we can get ourselves invoved in the London 2012 games…. So don’t worry i’ll be back

Last night we went to the Vancouver Performing Arts Centre to see ‘Rain’ which was performed by Cirque Eloize. It was a Greek, Italian and French fusion and included a variety of Circus-like performance elements.

My favourite part of the show was the ribbon performance, where four performers were hanging from giant ribbons hanging from the ceiling, spinning and twirling really fast in the air. I also enjoyed watching the gymnastic-like performance by two male performers. It required a combination of balance and strength as they were standing on each others heads, using each others body resistance. Even though I was quite tired by the end of the show, I still managed to see the really poignant ending where it started to rain over the stage – all the performers came back onto the stage, and to me that felt like a sign of release and exhalation…. breathtaking!

Its day 1 in Vancouver and we spent a agonizing 22 hours traveling. Although today has been more proactive; here’s how our day went-

In the morning: we went to Harbour House, Which is like a mini version of the CN Tower. There we able to experience a 360 view of Vancouver and its beautiful skyline filled with high-rise building and magnificent mountains. Our tour guide talked us through the different types of building their purposes. We were shown Vancouver’s massive harbour and the bridge that links North Vancouver to Central Vancouver. Our tour guide had moved to Vancouver about 3 years ago because of the bad economic downturn back in her hometown of France. She says she prefers it here in Vancouver because the people are more friendly, it’s really peaceful, and there’s lots of activities it both summer and winter.

In the Afternoon: we went to the Sports Hall of Fame at the BC Centre (British Columbia), had some lunch at a salad bar, then came back to the hotel to do some blogging

In the Evening: Wheelchair Curling! It sounds pretty boring but we all started to get into it once we understood the rules! We tried our best to support “team GB” but it was difficult as we were fighting against the predominantly Canadian crowd with their rather annoying chant “lets go Canada, Lets go!!!!” and their unnecessarily loud cow bells!

Yeah thats right it’s BREIS not breeze! Today i’ve been doing a workshop on with MC Breis at my school. He introduced himself with his rap indentity which is now stuck in my H (to da) E (to da) A (to da) D (and uh). I worked with jake and interiewed him to discover his identity. We then used these notes to form a poem/rap of our own.

we also learnt about words that end in “ow” such as cow, plow slough, pow, bow and…meow!

Jake’s first video – taking during the training day at Stoke Newington School & Sixth Form, 2 weeks prior to the visit…
